myCPE Mobile App & WBB Gig Taxes

Two distinct mobile product experiences: the myCPE mobile app — bringing CPE learning, compliance tracking, and Insights content to iOS and Android — and WBB Gig Taxes, a guided tax filing application for freelancers and gig workers. Both required designing complex multi-step workflows for small screens, with a strong emphasis on reducing friction at every step of the user journey.

Context & Challenge

The myCPE mobile app was designed to serve users who needed to consume CPE content on the go — commuting, traveling, or during short breaks. The challenge was translating the full-featured web platform into a mobile-first experience that felt native, not like a shrunken website. WBB Gig Taxes addressed a different challenge entirely: guiding first-time filers through a tax process they find confusing and intimidating, using a structured stepper flow that made an inherently complex task feel manageable. Both apps required designing for high-stakes tasks — professional compliance and tax filing — where errors have real consequences.

My Role & Scope

For the myCPE app, I was responsible for the mobile UX from navigation architecture through content consumption patterns, profile management, and Insights integration. For WBB Gig Taxes, I designed the complete end-to-end user journey: onboarding and signup, the personal information stepper, document upload with camera integration, review and correction screens, digital signature capture, and the final submission and confirmation flow. I delivered native iOS and Android specifications and worked directly with mobile developers during implementation.

Process & Approach

For the myCPE app, I started with a mobile content audit — identifying the top user tasks that could realistically be completed on a phone versus those better suited to desktop. The result was a focused mobile experience centered on content consumption (video courses, audio, articles), compliance tracking, and certificate access. For WBB Gig Taxes, the design process was driven by a user journey map of the entire tax filing process — identifying where users typically give up, what information they struggle to gather, and what language reduces anxiety around financial data entry. The stepper flow was prototyped and tested with gig workers before development began.

Design Showcase

The myCPE app features a tab-based navigation with Home, Learn, Insights, and Profile sections. The learning experience includes a built-in video player with speed controls, a compliance tracker showing credit progress by category, and push notification support for deadline reminders. WBB Gig Taxes is structured as a linear guided flow with a persistent progress indicator, contextual help tooltips, document upload with file type validation, and a clear review screen before submission.

Business Analysis Artifacts

The WBB Gig Taxes project required particularly detailed business analysis documentation because the filing flow is governed by both UX and legal/tax requirements. I documented the complete data collection model — every field, validation rule, and conditional logic (e.g., 'if user selects multiple income types, show additional schedule screens'). For the myCPE app, I wrote user stories covering offline content access, push notification preferences, and deep-linking behavior from email campaigns to specific course pages.

Outcomes & Impact

Both apps launched to positive adoption. The myCPE mobile app extended the platform's reach to users who prefer mobile consumption, integrating Insights content to drive daily engagement beyond compliance tasks. WBB Gig Taxes successfully guided first-time filers through a complex tax process with a completion rate that exceeded the benchmark for comparable tax preparation flows.

Key Learnings

Designing mobile apps for high-stakes tasks — compliance and tax filing — taught me that the primary design goal is confidence, not speed. Users need to feel certain that they're entering the right information before they submit. This means more confirmations, clearer error states, and more contextual help than you'd typically add to a consumer app. I also learned the practical differences between iOS and Android conventions: button placement, navigation patterns, and gesture interactions all differ, and ignoring those conventions creates friction for native users.
