Continuing Education by MYCPE ONE

myCPE ONE is a US-based continuing professional education (CPE) platform serving CPAs, accountants, tax professionals, and finance specialists. The platform offers 15,000+ hours of approved courses across 500+ subject areas — supporting 100+ professional qualifications including CPA, EA, CFP, CIA, and CMA. I joined myCPE ONE as a Senior UI/UX Designer and Business Analyst, working across the core product, mobile app, analytics dashboards, and AI-powered experiences. Over the course of my time here, I helped shape the platform from a cart-based course marketplace into a subscription-driven SaaS product now serving 80,000+ subscribers.

Context & Challenge

myCPE began as a cart-based CPE course marketplace where users purchased individual courses. As the business pivoted to a subscription model, the entire platform needed to be rethought — from how users discover content, to how they track compliance requirements, to how subscriptions are managed. The core challenge was designing a system that felt effortless for users who are not tech-savvy professionals, while handling the significant complexity of CPE credit tracking, course categories, and regulatory compliance across different accounting bodies.

My Role & Scope

I served as the primary UI/UX Designer — owning the product design end to end. My responsibilities spanned user research, information architecture, wireframing, high-fidelity prototyping, design system maintenance, and writing Business Requirements Documents (BRDs) and user stories for the development team. I collaborated directly with the Product Manager to prioritize features, worked with developers during sprint reviews to ensure design fidelity, and coordinated with marketing on the subscriber onboarding experience. The scope covered the full web platform, responsive layouts, and design specifications for the mobile engineering team.

Process & Approach

The redesign began with a comprehensive audit of the existing cart-based platform — mapping all user journeys, identifying friction points, and interviewing stakeholders on business goals. I then conducted user research sessions with a sample of existing platform users to understand how they discover courses and track their CPE requirements. From research I moved into information architecture — restructuring the navigation, content taxonomy, and subscription management flows. Wireframes were validated with stakeholders before moving to high-fidelity Figma prototypes. Each major feature — course discovery, subscription flows, the compliance dashboard — went through multiple rounds of review and iteration before development handoff.

Design Showcase

The final design system covers course cards, category filtering, a compliance tracker dashboard, subscription management screens, and the onboarding flow. Course discovery was redesigned with smart filters for CPE credit types, accounting bodies, and content formats. The subscription dashboard gives users a clear view of credits earned, pending requirements, and certificate management. The onboarding flow was reduced from 9 steps to 4, significantly improving completion rates.

Outcomes & Impact

The platform redesign directly supported myCPE's growth from a niche course marketplace to a leading subscription-based CPE platform. The redesigned onboarding reduced drop-off significantly, and the compliance dashboard became one of the most-used features according to product analytics.

Key Learnings

The biggest learning from this project was the importance of designing for compliance — not just usability. CPE requirements vary by accounting body, state, and profession, which means the design had to accommodate significant complexity without surfacing it to users unnecessarily. I also learned how much clarity a well-structured BRD can provide: when design and engineering share the same vocabulary around business rules, the number of revision cycles drops dramatically. Finally, the shift from cart to subscription required completely rethinking the user's mental model of 'value' — from buying individual courses to unlocking unlimited access — and that framing had to be consistent across every touchpoint.
